Shortage of Business Land in the Auckland Region

One of the key recommendations in the Papakura District Economic Development Strategy was the urgent need to identify further business land to provide capacity for local employment and business growth.

This local analysis reflects regional studies which identify that Auckland is facing a regional shortage of business land for activities such as manufacturing, transport and storage, construction, and wholesale trade. These land-extensive sectors tend to seek large, relatively cheap vacant sites, with good access to motorways, and that are located away from residential areas

The Auckland Business Land Strategy (BLS) provides a strategic framework for future business growth in the Auckland region to 2031 that is consistent with the overall direction provided in the Regional Growth Strategy. You can read the strategy here.

The regionally developed criteria for the assessment of new industrial areas include:

  • Access to major road/transport routes; road/motorway
  • Proximity to ports/airport
  • Flat land, large land parcel 100 ha minimum contiguous site
  • Potential for co-location with associated business activities or contiguous with existing business areas
  • Access to rail
  • Proximity to labour
  • Ability to buffer adverse effects from residential and sensitive activities
  • Low level of traffic congestion in vicinity
  • Exposure/profile/visibility
  • Existing or proposed public transport
  • Access to complementary/supporting business services

Initial investigations indicate that the Drury South Business Project area is well suited to accommodating industry, including its compatibility with the existing quarry activities.
